Captivated by graffiti ever since he was a child, Nils developed a fascination for the shapes of letters. During his studies at the Muthesius art school in Kiel, type and typography became Nils’ primary interests. The school’s type design classes led by Albert-Jan Pool played an important role in defining his next step – the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) in The Hague. Nils successfully completed his master’s degree in the postgraduate Type]Media course in 2010.
Nils’ master’s thesis consisted of designing the typeface “Meret” at the Type]Media course. Afterwards, the typeface was further developed by OurType and joined their collection in 2011.
Meret received the letter.2 Certificate of Excellence in Type Design from the Association Typographique Internationale in 2011.
In the same year, Christian Schwartz chose Meret as the new text face for the American business magazine “Fast Company”. In 2013, Meret was rated as one of the best typographies of the year by the “Communication Arts magazine”.
Between 2011 and 2013, Nils worked at Bureau Johannes Erler in Hamburg. During this time he participated in the redesign of the German daily Süddeutsche Zeitung, contributing to its new corporate typeface. Nils parts were the "text-face" and the additional headline "serif-face".
In the beginning of 2013 Nils started his own business, drawing typefaces and working as a freelancer in Hamburg. In early 2014 Nils Thomsen founded Nils Types to start distributing his own fonts.
